About – 南風舎 (Nan’pusha)

Welcome to Nan’pusha — a quiet space where Japanese literature speaks to the intellectually curious.

I’m Kasumi, your host. From Heian diaries and waka poetry to modern novels and the poetic stage of Noh, I share stories that continue to speak across centuries. My journey began with reading and recording these works, and as I return to them again and again, my love for Japanese literature deepens — gradually, steadily, and with wonder.

This project is designed for listeners like you — those who seek more than summaries. Here, Japanese literature becomes a companion for reflection:

  • English Introductions — Clear, thoughtful guides to classical and modern works, opening their historical and cultural depth while remaining accessible.
  • Audiobook Readings — Immersive narrations of texts such as The Tale of Ise, Natsume Sōseki’s The Gate, and Hakushū Kitahara’s poetry — allowing the language to resonate in its original beauty.
  • Noh Theater Stories — Part of Japan’s literary heritage, Noh offers another voice in this chorus: chant, poetry, and philosophy woven into theater.
  • Reflections & Essays — Quiet meditations on impermanence, beauty, and the human spirit — for readers who value depth and stillness.

At Nan’pusha, literature is not a relic but a living conversation. Each story — whether poem, novel, or play — offers a space to think, to pause, and to encounter beauty beyond time.

If you are drawn to ideas, to stories that linger, and to art that rewards patient attention, I invite you to join me. Together, we can walk slowly through the landscapes of Japanese literature — where every word is a thread, and every silence holds meaning.
